To do this job, you should have a bachelor’s degree in American Studies, history, or the like, as well as research experience(duh). Here is the actual job description.

The Researcher is responsible for researching to ensure accuracy and authenticity of American Girl characters, including books and print products, toy product, movies, games, marketing, retail displays and programs, customer service, and customer programs. A foundation of thorough research underlies the company’s content, product, and experiences, and is integral to maintaining and protecting American Girl’s premium status, point of difference, and valuable brand identity.

American Girl dolls, for the uninitiated, are terribly expensive but very, very fun way to tangentially learn about various periods in American history. I wanted one very badly as a child — Molly, the one with glasses who seemed plucky — but contented myself with getting the catalogues and staring wistfully at the doll-sized furniture and tiny, plastic food.

This job sounds really wonderful, though — consider it an effective way to monetize late-night Wikipedia deep dives into the history of toile. I am distinctly unqualified for this position, but I would gladly give it all up to go dig around in the stacks, looking up historically-accurate outfits and researching what a proper young lady would eat for luncheon in 1918.
