Happy National Donut Day!

It is my favorite day in early June.

Me celebrating National Donut Day in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Here’s how seriously I take National Donut Day: I have it as a recurring event on my calendar.

I’ve been celebrating National Donut Day for years, and over time my observance has evolved from “hey, the Krispy Kreme down the street is giving away free donuts, better go get one” to “okay, let’s use this day to get a donut, do some good in the world, and reflect on what’s happened since the last National Donut Day.”

I don’t know about your local donut shops, but Seattle’s donutmakers tend to make National Donut Day a way of giving back. Top Pot Doughnuts is requesting canned food items or donations—and yes, I just wrote donutions and backspaced it—to support Northwest Harvest, an organization that provides food to families in need. (Your donation will also get you entered into a raffle to win free donuts.)

Mighty-O Donuts will be donating National Donut Day proceeds to Seattle elementary schools. You also have the chance to win free donuts if you buy a dozen donuts, which I am not going to do because I only need one.

Rodeo Donuts is giving out free coffee with every donut purchase but does not seem to be donating anything besides the coffee, which means I do not need to visit Rodeo Donuts today.

But I’m going to Mighty-O, and I might stop by Top Pot as well—or I might just donate to Northwest Harvest online. (I really only need one donut.) I’ll take my annual National Donut Day selfie, and I’ll eat my donut and think about how much my life has changed in the past year, and how I feel about where I am, and where I might like to go in the future.

And yes, I will report back. I’ll also tell you what kind of donut I got.
