GO GO HBO GO

I’m pretty sure you heard the news, but we’re probably going to get a HBO stand-alone streaming service in 2015.

That means: you can pay for HBO and watch it on your laptop without buying cable.

The Washington Post quotes CEO Richard Plepler speaking at Time Warner’s Investor Day meeting:

“In 2015, we will be beyond the wall and launch a stand alone over-the-top service that will have the potential to produce hundreds of millions of dollars of additional revenues.”

Sounds like somebody’s been watching a lot of Game of Thrones. (Over the top and beyond the wall, eh? Now I’m curious: is HBO the wildlings, Mance Rayder, or the White Walkers? No, wait, maybe HBO’s the third head of the dragon! Maybe HBO’s Jon Snow’s mom!)

I am so very very excited for the most pirated show of all time (domestically and internationally) to become the most paid-for show of all time.

Because we have to do this now, team. We said we’d pay for HBO if they’d let us, so if it still makes sense within the larger context of our monthly budget and yearly financial goals, it’s time to make good on our word.

It’s only going to cost us… wait, HBO hasn’t said yet?

Okay. It’s only going to cost us some unknown number to be determined that I hope is less than $30/month.

And they better have the infrastructure in place before the Game of Thrones Season 5 premiere.
