Allen Iverson’s Life After the NBA

Iverson stood during a divorce proceeding in Atlanta in 2012 and pulled out his pants pockets. “I don’t even have money for a cheeseburger,” he shouted toward his estranged wife, Tawanna, who then handed him $61.

The Washington Post has a feature looking at how former NBA star Allen Iverson is doing three years after his last basketball game. It’s not good. Much of his money is gone, and his marriage has fallen apart. It’s a slightly familiar story of how some superstar athletes earning millions go broke (also evidenced by former NFL quarterback Bernie Kosar’s story in the “30 for 30” documentary Broke, which you can find on Netflix Instant Streaming).

One thing Iverson has got going for him is a deferred trust worth more than $30 million from an endorsement deal he inked with Reebok, which he won’t be able to touch until he’s 55 (half of the trust will also go to his estranged wife). At least he knows there’s money for him somewhere down the line.
