Reminder: the Billfold Book Club Is Discussing Chapters 1–25 of ‘North and South’ Tomorrow

It’s been a while since we last had a Billfold Book Club meeting, so I wanted to remind everyone that we’re discussing chapters 1–25 of Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South tomorrow.

If you haven’t had a chance to get a copy of the book yet, it is in the public domain and there are numerous free versions available, including a Project Gutenberg version that you can read in your browser right now.

Looking forward to talking about the first half of this book tomorrow! We stop on a cliffhanger, so it will be interesting to see how we think the characters will get themselves out of their respective pickles.

Also: the book has a lot of interesting and nuanced points to make about both business owners and the people they employ. Mr. Thornton is no Ebenezer Scrooge, and it’s not as simple as “boss bad, worker good.”

But that’s all I’m going to say about that until tomorrow.
