A Homeless Woman, Remembered

She was liked for her cheerful, gentle nature by the media crowd, including the staff of Private Eye and of the gossip website Popbitch, which announced after her death: “RIP Soho Pam. Drinking in Soho will be cheaper but less fun.”
This obituary of Pamela Jennings, a professional beggar in Soho, London in The Telegraph is a delight. Mostly because Jennings is such an interesting character, but also because of how English it is (“she conducted a daily game of cat-and-mouse” with Norman Balon, the proprietor of a pub called Coach & Horses who was known as the “rudest landlord in London”).
