We are huge fans of Ask a Manager’s Alison Green around here, and today she posted an interview with money coach Lynne Somerman of The Wiser Miser in which they discuss money management, running a small business, asking for what you’re worth, and why so many people are anxious about money:

The most common issues I see, that I work on with every single client, are a lack of awareness which usually leads to anxiety, and a thought pattern that tells people that budgets are all about restriction and being frugal.

In terms of awareness, I have learned that most people think they don’t make enough money and that’s the root of their money issues; in reality most people I work with have enough money but they spend too much because they don’t pay attention. Often, they don’t pay attention because they’re afraid of what they’ll learn.

I definitely have the thought pattern that tells me that budgets are all about restriction. I also have the anxiety, although in my case I think it’s less about a lack of awareness—I pay a lot of attention to my money—than it is on the idea that my income stream could stop at any time and I can’t control that.

But Alison Green and Lynne Somerman discuss that too, so read the whole interview. It’s so good.
