Do 1 Thing Even If It Feels Futile and Repetitive Like Laundry

Thursday is a great day to do that one thing you don’t want to do but also don’t want to continue thinking about doing

The Blind Side

Laundry gets everywhere, like water. It collects in buckets, hampers, piles. Clean socks gather under the bed and dirty socks drip off of the rungs of the ladder. Why is there a ladder in the bedroom? We can’t ever put away the ladder, even though it’s ugly, because it’s too tall to fit anywhere; and besides, it’s such a convenient place to hang socks while they air out and perhaps magically become fit for wear again.

Am I admitting to being the sort of slob monster who sometimes wears socks twice? MAYBE.

I’m living in a laundry swamp. I wish that I were either the kind of person who either cared deeply about not living in a laundry swamp, and so never let the puddles of laundry accumulate this way, or cared not at all, and so didn’t notice or mind. Instead I’m stuck in the middle, caring enough to be annoyed but not enough, most of the time, to prioritize taking action.

In other words, I identify with amywestervelt and her recent piece on how “having it all” kind of sucks:

Having It All Kinda Sucks

Today, though! Today is Thursday, a Do 1 Thing Day, and I will mobilize: I will clean what’s dirty and put away what’s clean. As long as I can manage to differentiate among the various piles, anyway. Then I will reward myself by calling to schedule a massage, since a very kind couple of friends sent me a gift certificate.

What’s your one thing and how will you get yourself to do it?
