The Cost of Baking S’mores Brownies

After Ester and my discussion of what we spend on our own birthdays, I wanted to share the cost of making s’mores brownies.

You’re probably thinking to yourself: Why brownies? Why not cake? The shortest answer is because I would have to decorate a cake, and the last time I decorated a birthday cake for myself, it turned out like this:

(That was the year I turned 30 and had a Cougar Town-themed party.)

So anyway. S’mores brownies, from the Betty Crocker recipe. (Make brownies, put mini-marshmallows and crumbled graham crackers on top, broil for just about one minute, add crumbled fun-size Hershey’s bars left over from Halloween.)

Betty Crocker fudge brownie mix: $1.99

3/4 cup olive oil (seriously?!): $0.60

Two eggs: $0.23

1/2 bag Kraft Jet-Puffed Mini Marshmallows: $0.75 (I used way more marshmallows than Betty Crocker suggested)

Four Nabisco Honey Maid Graham Crackers: $0.72 (ditto)

Six fun-size Hershey’s bars: $1.39

Total cost of s’mores brownies: $5.68

Were they delicious? YES.

Did I eat four of them? YES.

Did my guests enjoy them? THEY APPEARED TO!

Did I put the leftovers in the freezer because otherwise I would have eaten them all the next day? THIS IS HOW WE HAVE TO DO THINGS IN THE DIEKER HOUSE.
