Today Is The Day To File Your Taxes
Or an extension.

Today is Tuesday and it’s also April 18th and it’s ALSO the final day you can file your 2016 taxes without being late.
Perhaps you’re wondering why Tax Day is on a random Tuesday that’s decidedly not the 15th of April, as it has been drilled in your head since time immemorial. The 15th was on a Saturday, for starters. Monday was apparently “Easter Monday,” a holiday I had never heard of but as per a conversation I had with Nicole, is celebrated by some businesses being closed and some people getting an extra day off or whatever. Also, Monday in Boston was Marathon Monday, aka Patriot’s Day, aka the day where in college, I once lost a flip flop on the roof of a building in Allston in part because I had been drinking since 8 A.M. You can’t file your taxes during a marathon! Those are the rules.
So today. Today is the day. If you’ve already filed your taxes, congratulations. Go buy yourself a pre-emptive tax refund gift because taxes are an occasionally stressful personal administrative task that we all have to do. If you haven’t, you still have time! And, if you know for a fact that you aren’t going to do it right now — you’re missing a piece of paper or five or you can’t find that thing you know you need — file an extension.
Tax Day should be a holiday; we should all be able to take the day off in order to either get our finances in order or drink a margarita in the mid-April sun/gloom/grey to celebrate having done them earlier. Regardless: it’s over now. Tax Day. Here it is.
