Do 1 Thing, Ask For What You Need

It’s Thursday, which means it’s time to Do 1 Thing.

Today, my 1 Thing is to email a new CPA and ask to set up a meeting. The easy part is emailing the CPA. The hard part, which is why I’ve put this off for almost two weeks, is explaining what I would like to discuss with this CPA and illustrating the problems I’ve had with my current CPA without making them seem like problems. I don’t want to make anybody look bad, but I do want to say “here are the ways in which I think my financial needs have been overlooked, so I specifically want to stress these areas if you are available for an upcoming meeting.”

Asking for what you need is hard! Probably because, half the time, the other party turns around and says “that’s not what you need; that’s just what you think you want.” But I have to keep reminding myself that I have all the leverage in this situation. If I email this person and they reply in a way that feels condescending or dismissive, I can always end the conversation and email someone else. I CAN ALWAYS DO THIS. I will keep telling myself that.

What’s your 1 Thing?
