On ‘Pay What You Wish Night,’ She Wanted to Pay Nothing

She: “Your payment, please.”
Me: “I thought it was ‘Pay what you wish’ night.”
She: “Yes.”
Me (in a hush): “I wish to pay nothing.”
She (loudly): “That is not an option. You have to pay something.”

We’ve discussed paying suggested donations at museums before, but this morning’s Metropolitan Diary entry still made me feel anxious for the woman who wanted to pay nothing.
