Happy National Coffee Day!

Let’s do the math ONE MORE TIME on how much money we could save if we weren’t drinking this stuff!

It’s National Coffee Day, so let’s discuss how much we spend on coffee each month and which of our financial dreams we could be achieving if we were willing to give up this daily pleasure.

I buy 12-oz bags of Starbucks Italian Roast (whole bean) for $6.99, and one of those bags lasts me about three weeks, so I’m spending roughly $10.50 on coffee per month. (I do buy Starbucks because it’s inexpensive, compared to brands that I know would provide a more complex coffee flavor, but I also buy it because it’s good enough.)

If I gave up my coffee for an entire year, I’d save maybe $126. Think of all the things I could do with that money, like… pay 51 percent of one monthly health insurance premium bill! Take an Uber to the airport and back! Save 2 percent of my $5,400 emergency fund!

How much do you think you’re spending on coffee, and what could you be doing with that money instead?
