Job Of The Day: Antarctic Post Office, Shop, Museum Manager

Port Lockroy, Antarctica.

Do you really like penguins, museums, or the book Where’d You Go, Bernadette? Are you seeing all of those stories about the Mars One finalists and wishing you had signed up for your own adventure? Does Antarctica just sound cool? (It totally sounds cool. Ice cool.)

Well, here’s your chance.

The BBC announced that the Antarctic Heritage Trust is seeking four seasonal workers to spend November to March at Port Lockroy, to “run the post office, shop and museum as well as carry out maintenance.” You’ll get all expenses paid, along with “more than £1,000 per month.” The job is open to people of all nationalities; you do not need to be British to apply.

In fact, I’ve tried a few different times to access the official Antarctic Heritage Trust job listing, and the site is down “due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit.” Sounds like a lot of people are interested in this job. Maybe they’re just interested in the job listing, which — judging from the parts quoted by the BBC — reads a bit like a Best of Craigslist:

“Can you carry a big heavy box over slippery rocks and slushy snow whilst dodging penguins?” asks the job advertisement.

“Are you happy not to shower for up to a month, live in close proximity to three people and 2,000 smelly penguins for five months?”

If you’re going to leave it all behind to go run a post office/shop/museum in Antarctica, it’s good to know that you’ll be working for people who have a sense of humor.

There is a part of me that is currently splitting off into another segment of the multiverse and applying for this job. How about you?

(Hat tip to Jezebel, where I first learned about this job opportunity.)
