The Federal Reserve Movie

“What do you know about the Federal Reserve?” an interviewer asks a woman. “Not much,” she replies and then laughs. In all honesty, this is the likely response that a lot of people would have when asked this question.

Which is why there is a new documentary coming out this Friday about the effect America’s central bank has on our economy. It’s not exactly a summer blockbuster but it’s “made by a Team of AFI, Sundance, and Academy Award winners” and narrated by Liev Schreiber. And apparently, it’s enjoyable! Here’s Reuters discussing a recent screening:

The midtown Manhattan audience of economists and investors hooted and howled at decade-old footage of Greenspan telling a congressional committee that bank regulators have no clue how derivatives work so should simply let Wall Street police itself in the years to come; Timothy Geithner is seated just off the Maestro’s right shoulder, and the film shines a wry spotlight on the man who would run the New York Fed as Wall Street collapsed into crisis a few years later.

It might even make a good date movie! I’d go to this movie, and I’d even offer to pay rather than go dutch.
