Why Would Someone Stop Eating I Don’t Understand Please Explain

Why are inmates in California on a hunger strike? Mother Jones explains:

“More than anything, the hunger strikers want to put an end to the increasingly common practice of long-term solitary confinement in the state’s prisons. Most of them are inmates in the Pelican Bay State Prison’s Security Housing Unit (SHU), where as many as 1,500 people are being held in 11-foot-by-7-foot windowless cells; about 400 have been in solitary confinement there for more than a decade.”

MJ also has excerpts from a letter from a hunger striker. It’s upsetting:

“I have prepared myself for death, but if I can survive this to go on and make more contributions to the cause of progressive social change, I’d like the opportunity. I will not stop until they say it’s over or my body fails — whichever comes first.”
