‘The Working Man Is Just as Depressed as Anyone Else’
Sady Doyle’s essay about her dad and Bruce Springstein’s Darkness on the Edge of Town is a must-read. Really. I’ve read it twice and it punched me both times, hard, in the stomach.
Here’s what you need to know about Sady Doyle’s dad: “I abandoned my father when I was sixteen. I call it what it is, abandonment, because I believe that when you’ve done something cruel, you ought to name it.”
And here’s what you need to know about Bruce Springstein and Darkness: “…he cut against his pop impulses, listening to punk and country to get the colors just right. And all the colors are black.”
